Damage States & Targeting

OVERVIEW

In Star Citizen, ship destruction follows two paths:

Targeting vital components (Power Plant, engines, fuel tanks, life support) can accelerate either path. This guide shows targeting priority by engagement role.

State Descriptions

Vital Components

These internal systems have the highest priority in combat. Destroying them triggers system failure or disaster.

Power Plant

Effect: Destroyed = all electrical systems offline. Shields, engines, weapons, avionics all fail instantly. Ship becomes inert.
Engagement: Fastest path to soft death. Preferred vs light fighters and interdictors.
Location: Usually central fuselage, rear section.

Main Thrusters (RCS + Maneuvering)

Effect: Damaged = loss of precise maneuverability. Extreme yaw/pitch/roll delays. Ship drifts or tumbles.
Engagement: Immobilize capital ships and transport. Prevent escape. Allows follow-up strike on power plant.
Location: Wing pods, rear fuselage, directional vectoring.

Fuel Tank

Effect: Destroyed = decompression + fuel ignition. Catastrophic explosion. Instant hard death in many cases.
Engagement: Highest risk/reward. One-shot if you connect. Dangerous near friendlies.
Location: Wing roots, fuselage center, cargo bay (on transport ships).

Life Support

Effect: Damaged = pressurization failure, oxygen depletion. Crew takes cumulative damage. Ship becomes uncrewed within ~20–30 seconds.
Engagement: Secondary target. Crew eject or die, ship becomes derelict.
Location: Usually mid-fuselage, accessible from habitation zones.

Cooling System

Effect: Damaged = thermal runaway. Ship overheats, power plant stress, potential cascade failure.
Engagement: Synergizes with power plant damage. Reduces time to soft death.
Location: Wing intakes, ventral fuselage.

Targeting Priority by Role

Adjust your target component based on the opponent's ship type and your doctrine.

1v1 Fighter Duel (Dogfight)
  • 1st Priority: Power Plant — Instant incapacitation. No counter-fire.
  • 2nd Priority: Maneuvering Thrusters — Reduce enemy turn rate; you maintain initiative.
  • 3rd Priority: Weapons Hardpoints — Disable turrets or gimbals to reduce DPS.
Capital Ship Engagement (Retribution, Javelin, etc.)
  • 1st Priority: Main Thrusters — Immobilize the capital. Prevent pursuit or repositioning.
  • 2nd Priority: Power Plant — Disable shields and weapons systems simultaneously.
  • 3rd Priority: Cooling — Force power plant overload if damaged in parallel.
  • Note: Coordinate with squadron. Single fighter cannot solo a capital.
Transport / Cargo Interception (Hull C, Caterpillar, Starfarer)
  • 1st Priority: Fuel Tank — High risk, high reward. One shot often = total loss.
  • 2nd Priority: Thrusters — Slow them down. Prevent QT jump. Easy prey.
  • 3rd Priority: Life Support — Crew ejects; ship floats as salvage.
Defensive (Protect Wingman)
  • 1st Priority: Enemy Weapons — Silence their DPS. Reduce threat to friendlies.
  • 2nd Priority: Enemy Engines — Trap them near friendly spawn/repair.
  • 3rd Priority: Power Plant — Finish disabled targets.
Stealth / Interdiction (Sabre Raven, Eclipse)
  • 1st Priority: Power Plant — One strike from undetected position. Instant kill.
  • 2nd Priority: Fuel Tank — If power plant is shielded; catastrophic damage.
  • Doctrine: Ambush, not sustained fire. Hit and disengage before return fire.

Soft Death Threshold Calculation

Soft death triggers when ~20–25% of max hull HP remains. Here's the threshold for your selected ship:

Doctrine & Tactics

Soft Death as Victory Condition

In PvP, disabling an opponent's ship (soft death) is often preferable to destroying it:

Critical Component Hardening

Defenders can improve component durability:

Cascading Failures

Hitting multiple systems at once accelerates soft death:

Recovery from Damage
