⚒ ENGINEERING
WHAT IS THE ENGINEERING LOOP
CONCEPT
Crew members repair damaged internal components while the ship is in flight. When a power plant, shield generator, thruster, weapon system, or life support takes damage in combat or from environmental hazards, the engineer goes EVA or accesses the engineering bay and uses repair tools to restore functionality.
GAMEPLAY
Engineer identifies damaged systems via ship comms or suit display, prioritizes repairs, deploys to the damaged module, and performs repairs under time pressure (fuel/oxygen limits, ongoing damage). Success depends on tool selection, component knowledge, and efficiency.
ROLE FIT
Engineers are essential crew for longer flights, capital ships, and PvP engagements. Without repairs, lost shields/thrusters mean mission abort or defeat. Engineering is a support discipline, not solo-capable but mission-critical on teams.
COMPONENTS THAT CAN BE REPAIRED
POWER PLANT
Main reactor. Damage reduces power distribution. Critical for all systems. If offline, ship goes dark.
SHIELDS
Shield generators. Damage lowers capacity or regeneration speed. Combat-essential repair target.
THRUSTERS
Main, RCS, and VTOL engines. Damage limits acceleration, rotation, or hover. Cripples mobility.
WEAPONS
Gun turrets and hardpoint mounts. Damage reduces firing rate, accuracy, or shuts down completely.
LIFE SUPPORT
Oxygen, pressure, temperature control. Damage suffocates crew or causes environmental hazard.
COOLERS
Thermal management. Damage causes overheat, which spreads damage to connected systems.
REPAIR TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
MULTITOOL + REPAIR HEAD
PRIMARY TOOL
The standard MultiTool with a Tractor Beam or Repair attachment. Hold the attachment over a damaged component and activate to begin repairs. Works in EVA suits or inside pressurized engineering bays.
SPEED & SKILL
Repair time depends on tool quality and engineer suit bonuses. Higher-tier tools repair faster. Engineering armor (e.g., Pembroke suit) grants +25% repair speed and other engineer-specific perks.
REPAIR BOT (AUTONOMOUS)
FUTURE FEATURE
Planned but not yet live: deploy a small autonomous repair drone that handles basic repairs on its own. Reduces engineer workload and allows simultaneous repairs on multiple components. Expected in a future patch.
ENGINEER ARMOR BONUSES
SUIT PERKS
Wearing engineer-rated armor (Pembroke, DF Black, etc.) grants:
- Increased repair speed (+25% typical)
- Reduced power consumption during repairs
- Tool accuracy / precision bonuses
- Heat resistance (for internal bay work)
WHERE TO BUY
Armor: New Babbage, Grim Hex, ArcCorp (clothing shops). Tools: General equipment vendors or industrial supply shops.
SHIPS WITH ENGINEERING BAYS
LARGE MULTI-CREW
Ships with dedicated engineering bays or internal component access:
Reclaimer — industrial salvage, spacious internal corridors, dedicated bay
Carrack — explorer capital ship, engineering station, accessible internals
Idris-P — military capital ship, full crew roles including engineer
Javelin — destroyer, large and modular, engineer stations
Hammerhead — gunship, multiple turrets & internals, engineering access
SMALLER MULTI-CREW
Limited internal access; engineers work via EVA repairs on external components:
Cutlass, Connie, Freelancer, Vanguard — can be repaired but require EVA for some bays
SOLO SHIPS
Single-seat fighters (Sabre, Hornet, Gladius, etc.) have no internal engineering station. Damage to internal components requires full respawn or EVA hull breach repair (rare edge case).
TIP: Larger ships benefit most from having a dedicated engineer crew member. Check a ship's layout on the Loadout Bay to see if it has accessible engineering spaces.
PLAYING ENGINEER ON A CREW
JOB DUTIES
MONITOR HEALTH
Watch ship comms and suit radar for damage alerts. Pilot or crew lead will prioritize which systems to repair first. Keep track of incoming damage to prioritize.
TRIAGE & PRIORITIZE
Critical repairs first:
Power plant offline → full repair priority
Shields down → 2nd priority (combat-critical)
Main thrusters damaged → 3rd priority (mobility-critical)
Weapon systems → low priority (can coast on surviving turrets)
COMMS DISCIPLINE
Report status clearly: "Power plant 40% repaired, 3 min remaining" so pilot knows how much longer before shields online. This helps pilot evade while you work.
WORKFLOW
STEP 1: IDENTIFY
Pilot/lead comms damaged system location. You check ship interior map or EVA suit visor to see the component.
STEP 2: NAVIGATE
For internal bays, run to the compartment. For external bays, suit up for EVA and exit the airlock. Plan your oxygen/fuel carefully.
STEP 3: REPAIR
Equip MultiTool with repair head. Hold the beam on the damaged component until repair completes. Avoid getting hit (you take damage too).
STEP 4: VERIFY
Check suit visor or ship comms to confirm component health is restored. Return to cockpit or standby for next repair.
ADVANCED TACTICS
FUEL MANAGEMENT
In EVA, track your suit fuel and oxygen. High-tier suits hold more; bring backup fuel. If fuel runs out mid-repair, you're stranded.
HEAT EXPOSURE
Some engine bays are hot. Engineer armor provides heat resistance. Without it, you take thermal damage while near hot components.
MULTI-TEAM COORDINATION
On very large ships (Reclaimer, Idris), coordinate repairs with gunners and other crew. Don't all bunch in one bay.
PRO TIP: In PvP or combat, hide behind cover while repairing. Enemy fighters may strafe components. A smart enemy targets the engineer first to cripple repairs.
CURRENT STATE & ROADMAP
LIVE IN 4.x
✓ MultiTool repair mechanics (manual, hand-held)
✓ Damage to shields, power, thrusters, weapons
✓ EVA suits + internal suit HUD for navigation
✓ Engineering armor & suit bonuses
✓ Multi-crew ship layouts (Carrack, Reclaimer, capital ships)
FUTURE / IN DEVELOPMENT
○ RepairBot autonomous drone (planned)
○ Advanced damage states (partial damage, degradation)
○ Engineering tools specialization (heavy repairs vs. field fixes)
○ Environmental hazards (fire, decompression during repairs)
○ Repair queuing (multiple engineers repairing simultaneously)
STAY TUNED: The engineering loop is a core pillar of Star Citizen's multi-crew gameplay. Expect expanded mechanics, new ships with engineering bays, and specialized tools in future patches.
QUICK REFERENCE
START REPAIRING
Equip MultiTool. Select Repair attachment. Hold beam on damaged component until progress bar completes.
REPAIR SPEED
Quality tool + engineer armor = fastest repairs. Higher-tier suits grant +25% bonus. Plan for 1–5 min per component.
BEST SHIPS
Reclaimer, Carrack, Idris, Javelin, Hammerhead. Smaller ships require EVA for internal bays.
PRIORITY REPAIRS
Power plant → shields → main thrusters → weapons. Work top-down in combat scenarios.
ARMOR CHOICE
Pembroke, DF Black, or other engineer-rated suits. Available at New Babbage, Grim Hex, ArcCorp.
COMMS CADENCE
Report every 30–60 sec in combat: "Power 60%, 2 min" so pilot knows timeline for return to full power.
